Ver5 loads very slow in IE7

Post by steve.n »

I'm experiencing this problem on any site using ver5? I'm using Vista/IE7. Opens instantly in Firefox but takes about 10-15 seconds to open in IE7.

I finally tracked the problem down - slow and painful to do so I figure I'd post it so others don't suffer the experience :)

The culprit is an add-on called Norton Confidential Browser Helper Object. By process of elimination I discovered when this was disabled the menu works fine. I believe this add-on is part of the Norton Internet Security I purchased over a year ago so why it has only recently caused issues with the menu I'm not sure.

In IE go to Internet Options - Programs and Manage Add-Ons to access.

Might be an idea to remove ALL Norton products from your PC - They cause no end of problems.

Many years ago Norton created some brilliant software but these days they are bloated and buggy and do some of the strangest of things imaginable.

Hi,

Can you please try this page and let me know if you see the menu appear quickly with Norton switched on?

That seems to do the trick, Andy. I double checked the menu still loads slowly elsewhere and it does.

I have another bug that's not entirely related to your menu but may be causing a conflict with sIFR 3. I'll post that in a new topic sometime.

Which version of Norton are you using?

Just tried with Norton Internet Security 16.0.0.125 and everything was fine - all sites came up pretty instantly.

Norton Internet Security 15.0.0.60

I'll see if I can update to the latest version you have tho I normally expect Norton to automate this process!

Hi,

Can you please try this link:

http://milonic.com/index.php?menuve ... re_release

It's a long shot but worth a go.

What I think has happened is that Norton have actually fixed the problem and that is why I do not see any issues with the copy I downloaded from their website. What I'm trying to do is collate as much information as I can about version numbers etc to see if there is a pattern.

The problem we have is being able to get hold of an oldish version of Norton Security (version 10 I think) and see if I can see any problems. if I can, I'm sure I can fix it.

if you can let me know if the Pre Release version works or not and also the version numbers you have. Version numbers should be in "About NIS" or somewhere near to the help menu.

Cheers,
Andy

Hi,

Some more links for your to try:

http://milonic.com/index.php?menuversion=5.80

http://milonic.com/index.php?menuversion=5.795

http://milonic.com/index.php?menuversion=5.890

The versions can be obtained from http://milonic.com/menuvinfo.php

I'm sorry to have to ask you think but if we can pin-point a version that works against one that fails we should be able to eliminate what has changed and thus find a fix. At the moment we are having to make guesses and I\'m sure that this was never an issue before so something must have changed in our code to start this reaction.

Hi Steve,

I think I have found an issue between 2 versions of the menu.

I've now checked all modifications made between version 5.797 and 5.798 - There was something I found that could cause a problem that has now been rectified and applied to the current version of the menu.

Can you please visit (make sure you press CTRL+F5 for full refresh) http://milonic.com/ and let me know if our menu loads any better?

Cheers,
Andy

Hi Andy,

It takes exactly 22 seconds to load (in IE7 with Norton enabled) after F5 and even clearing my cache and trying a few times

and about 2 seconds to load in FF3

Here are they others

http://milonic.com/webplugs/demos/notation.php (opens in a few seconds)

http://milonic.com/index.php?menuve ... re_release (slow, 20secs)

http://milonic.com/index.php?menuversion=5.80 (slow, 20secs)

http://milonic.com/index.php?menuversion=5.795 (slow, 20secs)

http://milonic.com/index.php?menuversion=5.890 (did not show a menu)

More than happy to assist you further, Andy, I just hope its not something silly and unique my end that's causing this!?

Can you please try these:

http://milonic.com/index.php?menuversion=5.795
http://milonic.com/index.php?menuversion=5.794
http://milonic.com/index.php?menuversion=5.793
http://milonic.com/index.php?menuversion=5.792
http://milonic.com/index.php?menuversion=5.791
http://milonic.com/index.php?menuversion=5.790
http://milonic.com/index.php?menuversion=5.789
http://milonic.com/index.php?menuversion=5.798
http://milonic.com/index.php?menuversion=5.787
http://milonic.com/index.php?menuversion=5.786
http://milonic.com/index.php?menuversion=5.785

I downloaded a trial version of Norton and version 16.0.0.125 did not exhibit any problems. I'm guessing you have an older version and this is the version we need for testing. However, Norton do not advise you install anything other than the latest so this bug is going to almost impossible to fix unless I can get a copy of the buggy version.

Which version do you have?

The first two, 795 and 794 plus 798 take approx 20 seconds to load

The rest load in about 8 seconds but when you mouse over the menu it takes another 5 seconds or so before the menu becomes interactive. This does not occur with the other 3

Has there been any resolution on the Milonic side to this problem? Please advise. While the Norton work around definitely solves the problem, I can't expect everyone accessing my site to know about it. I'm running 5.807 and still have the issue if I enable the Norton Confidential Browser add-in. Thanks in advance.

As far as Norton is concerned it's fixed for NIS version 16+ but the older versions that are still out there will be in issue for a while.

I'm really not sure what the answer is. In reality Norton have introduced this at the browser level and no end of workarounds we do will fix it.

One this you could try is to add _CFix=true; to the top of your menu_data.js file

For those who are experiencing this issue it is possible to update your version of Norton Internet Security to the latest version. I did it by going through some options on the support page and then selecting update. The new version does fix the issue.

I'm currently building 2 new sites for some clients using the Milonic menu - I'm also concerned about potential problems for those using older versions of NIS - One site gets around 30,000 visits a month. Andy, would it make sense to use an older version of your menu in the mean time? I have not yet bought registered versions for these 2 sites.

Lot's of people using Norton and many with older versions. I use the Milonic menu on my business web site and the slowness of the page/menu loading is a real problem for potential customers. Is a fix still being worked on for this problem of Ver5 loading so very slow in IE7?

My daughter and I have identical computers, both running IE7 and Norton Internet Security. When I open a web page where I have a Milonic menu using her computer, it takes about 20 seconds or so to load. When I open the same page on my computer it loads very fast. So, I guess the problem is not IE7 but the difference in versions of Norton we are using - is this what appears to be causing the problem?
