You could in fact achieve this by putting the arrow image in the menu enty with the text. While this is not as easy as using the global variable for the submenu arrows, it is effective and allows you to use the rollover function built into the menu.

I have noticed other menu systems allow the sub-menu arrow to have a mouse over image. I think that'd be a great addition to this system.
