Somebody please convince me to convert

Post by calebgriffin » Sat Mar 20, 2004 5:03 pm

I'm about to buy a pro license but I'm not sure if I should upgrade to version 5 from 3.2. I have both menus on my webserver now. I can't seem to get the version 5 to look like the version 3. Version 3 has a groovy shadow that I see no option for in Version 5. Also, Version 3 has a semi-transparency which is not in Version 5. The only reason I can come up with for wanting to upgrade is that I'm having a hard time getting Version 3 to position properly in a page that will (eventually) be centered. I'm told that Version 5 can be embedded into a table which is exactly what I need.

See the menus here.

V.3 http://helene.affordablehost.com/~freed ... pation.htm

V.5 http://helene.affordablehost.com/~freed ... blank.html

How do I get the shadow and the transparency?

I don't see shadow and transparency because it only works in IE.

In the menu_data.js

these are the lines:

overfilter="Fade(duration=0.2);Alpha(opacity=90);Shadow(color='#777777', Direction=135, Strength=5)";
outfilter="randomdissolve(duration=0.3)";

YES - Convert

Post by XcalibuR » Sat Mar 20, 2004 6:52 pm

Unless you don;t like your MAC and other viewer browsers - I SERIOUSLY recommend upgrading. Will only take 1/2 day or less to understand all if you already use older 3.

And I'm no wiz.

View your site in MAC browsers and see why YOU MUST upgrade!

5+ is awsome

One more thing ... Is there a reason why you left this off the top of menu_data.js?

Code: Select all

if(navigator.appVersion.indexOf("MSIE 6.0")>0)
{
effect="Fade(duration=0.2);Alpha(style=0,opacity=44);Shadow(color='#777777', Direction=135, Strength=5)"
}
else
{
effect="Shadow(color='#777777', Direction=135, Strength=5)"
}

One more question

Post by calebgriffin » Sat Mar 20, 2004 7:55 pm

Why did you leave this stuff out?

Code: Select all

high3dcolor="0b0955";
low3dcolor="#000099";
headercolor="#000000";
headerbgcolor="#000000";

Your first question, I believe that's already taken care of in one of the js files that checks for Nav.

Your second question, probably just include it if it works okay for you, but do add the # to the color, it won't work without it.

Because in your existing file you don't have any headers declared and I don't see anyplace where the high 3d/low3d is showing the aqua or dark blue.
As to switching, version 5 is fabulous, there is so much more you can do with it, it's designed to work with the more modern things browsers are doing. Test Page This is messing with styles to change the menu colors for each page as an example of some of the things you can do. Just click the test page link at the top and watch the menu switch on the next page to match the colors. [ignore some of the little glitches, they are things I'm trying with functions and such, NOT things in the menu itself. I absolutely love this menu, and I am not a code person, not into javascript and stuff, that I ask others for help, I just love the way you can make the menu individual for your site. Here's another site from someone else who designed the menu to have two menu bars one on top of the other and still have them scroll in unison. And uses the high/low 3d swap.

http://www.leicesterandleicestershire.com/ and here's one that uses a neat image design http://www.penlink.com/ and this is Maz's which uses a right side align, I still can't figure how that got done, will have to download the files and check it out. Really like that right side menu. http://www.mercuryexposure.org/index.ph ... _doc&pid=1 These are just so you can see how versatile the menu is. I really like this menu, enough so I put a really prominent link on mine :) .

Thanks for everything

Post by calebgriffin » Tue Mar 23, 2004 2:10 am

You guys have been really helpful. I upgraded and bought the license today. I was able to embed V.5 in the table just like I wanted but I still have two questions.

Perhaps, I implemented Andy's suggestion wrongly but I'm only getting the shadow effect on the submenus. The main menu has no shadow. How do I rectify that?

Secondly, why is my fontsize attribute only affecting the submenus? Nothing I've tried so far, will change the font size of the main menu.

Here's the menu to which I'm referring.

http://helene.affordablehost.com/~freedom/milonic_test/

If you'd like to see what shadow effect I desire, you can see the version 3 one here

http://helene.affordablehost.com/~freedom/

Thanks again everyone.

Try putting the fontsize in the style on menu_data.js and although this should work.

fontsize=14;

this might help:

fontsize="14px";

The reason you are not seeing it is that you have the menu in a table cell of a fixed width and with the 'shadow' it shifts the menu making the text look like it's almost off the left side and pushing it against the right side of the table making the shadow kind of disappear, since with the shadow it's wider than the declared width. After playing around I got it to work.

1. in you menu data file put the following

Code: Select all

with(menuStyle1=new mm_style()){
offcolor="#0B0955";
offbgcolor="#d1d1fe";
oncolor="#0b0955";
onbgcolor="#ffffff";
bordercolor="#000000";
borderstyle="solid";
borderwidth=1;
separatorcolor="#2D729D";
separatorsize="1";
padding=3;
fontsize=14;
fontstyle="normal";
fontweight="bold";
fontfamily="Garamond, Arial";
pagecolor="black";
pagebgcolor="white";
headercolor="#000000";
headerbgcolor="#ffffff";
subimage="arrow.gif";
subimagepadding="1";
high3dcolor="#000000";
overfilter="Fade(duration=0.2);Alpha(opacity=85);Shadow(color='#777777', Direction=105, Strength=7)";
outfilter="randomdissolve(duration=0.3)";
}
you'll note it's almost the same as the other but with a couple of changes. If you make your font 16 the menu pushes way down the page extending that td cell. At 14 and bold it seems to fit just as the old one shows.

2. This is your main menu you have in the table with any fixes and what was needed to fix it so it would show the shadow.

Code: Select all

with(milonic=new menuname("Main Menu")){
style=menuStyle1;
fontsize="15px";
menuwidth="99%";
itemwidth="150px";
alwaysvisible=1;
screenposition="top;left";
position="relative";
aI("text= Home;url=http://helene.affordablehost.com/~freedom/index2.htm;;status=Welcome to FGELC!;");
aI("text= Spoken Word Of  God;showmenu=wordofgod;;status=Hear the Word Of God;");
aI("text= Bible Study Center;showmenu=biblestudycenter;;status=Get to know the Bible;");
aI("text= What\'s Happening?;url=http://helene.affordablehost.com/~freedom/mt/blog;;status=Church News;");
aI("text= Prayer Requests;url=http://helene.affordablehost.com/~freedom/requests.htm;;status=Let us pray for you;");
aI("text= Contact Us;url=http://helene.affordablehost.com/~freedom/contactus.htm;;status=Speak with us;");
aI("text= Church Info;showmenu=info;;status=Information;");
aI("text= Transportation;url=http://helene.affordablehost.com/~freedom/transportation.htm;status=We will pick you up;");
aI("text= What We Believe;showmenu=believe;status=We believe in Love;");
aI("text= Emancipated  Youth;showmenu=EG;status=Be yourself!;");
aI("text= About Us;showmenu=aboutus;status=Meet the family;");
aI("text= Bible Tools;url=http://helene.affordablehost.com/~freedom/resources.htm;status=Research and Learn;");
}
drawMenus();
you already have separators defined in the menu_data file you don't need to put them here, also you needed a ; at the end after the ) I also had to put the non breaking line spaces to get it to not look as if the first letter of the text was sort of shaved on the left side.

3. In the td cell with the menu you need to add a bgcolor="#d1d1fe" that's the bgcolor of the menu.

HERE'S the page with bgcolor defined for that cell

HERE with no bgcolor defined for that cell this doesn't look too good to me.

I only have a pc, but it works on ns 4.79, 6, 7, opera 6, 7, ie 5.5 Hope that helps.

Also, I think you need to take out that coding at the top of the data file like Andy said. That seems to be how the converter 'translates' it but it's not needed since you can code the over/out filter in the styles. It was needed in version 3 I believe so that 3 would render that filter. Good luck.

You're welcome. I enjoy doing such because it gives me info on how to get certain things done. One thing, I don't think I was clear that menuStyle1 is in addition to the menuStyle you already have in the file. menuStyle for the subs and menuStyle1 for the main one in the table. There is a way to do copy of 'whatever' menu style and only list the actual different things, but I haven't looked into it. Have fun

Ruth
