MENU INSTALLATION?

Please note that official support for this menu version has now ceased. There are still plenty of users, though, and the forum is still running. Some of our long-time users may be able to help you out.

MENU INSTALLATION?

Post by Mike O'Shea »

:?: I'm stuck with a navigation problem on my website - see it at http://www.o2c.org .
I simply do not know the first thing about installing and using the 'follow me' menu. Any advice / instruction would be a great help! Thanks.

First - I'm old, too, and not sane, so why should you be any different :?: :P

OK, FWIW, I see a number of things in your source that aren't working on the page - the clock for one. Just FYI.

As for the follow menu, it took me a while to get it down as well (thanks, Andy!). I think the easiest would be to see http://www.west.asu.edu/cspc/steps/intro.htm for an example and the array at http://www.west.asu.edu/cspc/menu_arraysteps.js. With Andy's great comments you should be able to get it from there.

Making Menu

Post by Mike O'Shea »

Thank you JG. I am heartened by your willingness to help - and also Andy the same. I had an email from him to say that he was/is only a week away from completing an automatic installation pack (not his words! My technical terminology is self-created, like 'sliding-out navigation thingy' which I now know stands for Menu. )
But whatever y'callit Andy's installation package sounds great, for the menus he has created are superb, and there is no way that I would be able to install such a system without considerable help.
I had a look at your academic website. The menu works well. You have put a lot of work into it.
One thing (as an ex-Art&Design man I can't resist - God forgive me!). The light blue on a panel as one leaves it is great (lovely to look at) but I think the dark blue tends to visually overwhelm. I experienced this feeling when one of the packed menu links appeared, blotting out the anchor page and leaving me with an uneasy feeling that if I clicked on an item I would permanently obliterate the safety of my starting page. Ridiculous I know, but it was a genuine psychological reaction.
I seem to remember on the Milonic pages their menus having a feeling of transparency. I'm sure you will know what I mean. Basicly I am saying that I think your dark blue is too dark! Isn't that cheeky!
Anyway, your Arizona site is great. Most informative. I felt like joining up as an undergradutae.
The other link you gave does not work, by the way. Well, I couldn't find it!
Sorry this comment is so long. I tend to work on the verbose side of things, despite strenous efforts to fight the addiction.
PS: Until Andy's miracle menu maker appears I have concocted a home-made solution to my navigation problem (14 hours straight work ending 6 a.m. today). You can see it at http://www.o2c.org
OH YES! Thanks again for your input. It is so pleasant to know that perfect strangers are willing to help cross-Atlantic & other world neighbours. Ta muchly.

Hi Mike -

Many thanks for the kind words. I think you'll find that almost everybody around here is willing to help, especially Andy. Ya gits back what ya gives out! :D

Appreciate your comments. Trust me - the color choice in that menu was not my idea. [See a better one at http://westcgi.west.asu.edu/sai/ - that's 5 individual graphics scrolling together - again, thanks, Andy!] The only thing I was able to sway was the mouse-over color - it used to be green :!: At least now the lighter blue is not so scary. I also understand the width of some of those menus is a bit overwhelming, but the idea was to keep each item on a single line rather than to have them wrap. If I can talk them into a lighter blue, or even shift to the maroon scheme of the whole site, maybe it won't be so bad.

As for the http://www.west.asu.edu/cspc/menu_arraysteps.js link, it does work (at least from here). It should give you a save dialog box right away, as obviously it's not a web page! Just save it and then open in a text editor.

Am unable to look at your site right now as my campus network went down right after I pulled up this page, so I can't get offsite, either. Who knows when I'll be able to post this note :x

They had the menu builder available for some of us a few months ago. It's really nifty. Well worth waiting for.

Net's back - let's see if I can get this up :!:

Thanks again.
