Scrolling & Small Res Screens

Please note that official support for this menu version has now ceased. There are still plenty of users, though, and the forum is still running. Some of our long-time users may be able to help you out.

Scrolling & Small Res Screens

Post by fiscus »

First of all this is an amazing menu however I just need to fix a couple of things.

The menu in Question is @ http://www.screenwise.com.au/

Just about everything works fine on my system - the problem is with people running a smaller res ie. 800x600

If you change you res (please test using 800x600) and go to tutors you can see there is a rather long list. Initially I was having a problem with the flash going over the menu - I fixed that by rendering the movie in transparent mode as someone else suggested.

However in normal mode the list of tutors is too long for the screen. To overcome this I had to set the submenu for tutors to be closer to the top so the bottom will fit on the screen (in doing so that cause the flash issue) but because I am setting the exact position of that submenu, if you go to to tutors when you are on a page that scrolls down you will find the sub menu will appear at the top again - therefore not being able to see it?

What I am looking for is to set a top position - so a long menu can fit in - but if you aren't at the top of the page - it will display nortmally and therefore be visable?

I have looked at a scrolling sub menu but I cant seem to get that to work? Any ideas? How does the scrolling submenu work?

The other thing can someone please test this on a MAC - I have had reports that the tutors menu will only display the first 6 tutors.....feedback on that would eb great.

The other thing: is there an option to have a submenu with two coloums? Say I have the menu how is is - but if you were to click on tutors it would list two coloums (much like windows start menu will do if you have lots of items in there?

Many thanks

Hope I explained things ok - looking forward to some responses!

I wish someone would answer this as I'd like to know about scrolling and split menus myself.

Sorry, I'm not a techie, but have you tried reducing the menu font-size as a temporary measure until someone comes up with a better idea!
Of all the things that I have lost, I miss my mind the most.

That maybe a work around - but I still would like to get this scrolling work.

I have also had reports of MAC issues with this script - the users say the menu only goes down to the 6th tutor item and just stops - even when there is still screen area to fill.

It seems intermitent.

Suggestion

Post by leatherlips »

I don't have an answer to your questions, but can possibly offer a suggestion. Perhaps in the first submenu, you could list only about half of the list. You could add to that list "More Tutors", and have that open a submenu listing the rest of your list.

Not really a split submenu, but it could be a temp until an expert can answer your questions.

ie.

Tutors > Denise Roberts
Victoria Longley
Tina Bursill
Simon Burke
Lucy Bell
Andrew MacFarlane
Nico Latorus
More Tutors > Scott Hartford-Davis
Stephen Wallace
Etc...

Nice-looking page, eh.
Perhaps in the first submenu, you could list only about half of the list. You could add to that list "More Tutors", and have that open a submenu listing the rest of your list.
Or, until you get a better solution, list all the names individually on the main page. This should also help with search engine rankings (I note that you're not using META descriptions).

at this stage I don;t want to put all the tutors on the front page - want to cut down on size and keep thing simple - don;t want people wading through stuff they don;t need to.

I think what leatherlips suggested might be the go - isn;t the script meant to allow for scrolling submenu's? Has anyone got this to work? Surely other people has long lists?

The META's aren;t in place yet - page is still underconstruction.

Did anyone test it on a MAC - a client says that the Menu intermitently stops - only displays the 2st 6 tutors when there is still space to display more? She is running I.e. 5 on the MAC.

hi,

i have the same problem with long lists... apparently ive discovered that scrolling doesn't work for side bar menus (submenu pops up as a narrow vertical STRIP), and works buggy for top of screen menus. Andy seems to say in other replies that it is still experimental.

i definately cant wait until the fix, but until then im gonna do the same split it up into more submenus

Yup - Scrolling menus is just an idea we tried.

We left the code in for future reference as we tried to perfect it.

At the moment it doesn't work as expected and we development of version 3.x has now ceased.

We are still fixing bugs but additions may not happen. However, if enough people complain we may spend some more time on it for version 3.x.

Version 4 will definitely have this functionality.

Andy?

With my above example in mind, do you have a work around? Apart from making a submenu point to 'more tutors' and then it lists some more.

Anything else I can try?

Thanks

Hmmm,

Seems development of the menu may not have stopped after all.

With the advent of version 4 looming were torn between continuing to develop version 3.x or move on to version 4.

Personally, I prefer the later but as users you ultimately have the last say.

If I get enough grief from you guys about this issue I might reconsider and see what we can do. your happiness and satisfaction has and always will be our number one priority

Ewe.... That sounds real cheesy doesn't it :D

Andy,

Will version 4 have scrolling capabilties?

I'm all for version 4 - from the sounds of things its going to be better than ever!! If it had scrolling capabilities that would be fantastic.

Absolutely :D

As well as editable menus at runtime, blistering performance etc etc, much faster than it already is even with hundreds of menus.

Development has already started but will not really take off for about a month or so. December through March 2003 will be key times for v4 and April looks good for beta testing, but it could be sooner.

Cheers

I have the same issue

Post by wcs1997 »

I have the same exact issue. As we are waiting for v4, perhaps the double column idea would work. Ever find anything out about that? Here is my website http://www.motopeepers.com If you go to the Album->@ Play menu, you will notice it's length. As an interim solution I broke the menu in two, of course that is not what i would prefer...
