There is a much easier way than this.
Just create a table with a row that has a background image that you want to use.
Then just overlay the menu on top - either absolutely positioned or relatively using placemenu

netscape 6.2 and placemenu
Placemenu doesn't work in netscape for me.
I have an empty td with a background tag, and I have put the placemenu code inside that. It is also proceded by a 30x1px spacer image to produce the correct height for the bar.
in ie, it's fine! in netscape it appears with it's top aligned to the bottom ...
