I think its the placement, that you can't put menuwidth in global style.
You have it above items for that menu, that's where it works.

I see a centered menu in the horizontal lines, but what I don't see and you maybe need is either menualign=center; or screenposition=center; I think menualign is normally used in a table, but I've been absent and not sure if anything changed. You want alwaysvisible on the main menu, then the drop down submenu's shouldn't have it, because they will only be seen when they are moused over.

Fonts can vary on many levels, the computer font, the font you selected and the size of the font.

So check the fonts you have on the menu and the sizes until you find something that works for you.
