Troubleshooting Netscape

Hi there,

I am configuring my first Milonic menu and will be purchasing it shortly, I trust. It is coming together nicely as a (what I think) is a fairly tricky menu with layers that come up on mouse over and 3 levels. However, while it is working in IE, that B Netscape is not seeing it.

Any assistance to make it appear in Netscape would be most appreciated. NB The menu is in a table. The code that is in the table is also enclosed. I enclosed teh Menu Data file.

NB this is a work in progress so all links etc aren't yet complete. There is enough there to give you the idea though, I hope.

Which Netscape and what is the error? Right now you have a function call but you didn't give the function so that is always throwing an error when I mouseOver. I put a page together and had no problem with Netscape 6.1 Netscape 7.1, Firebird .07 [which is an old beta]

The easiest thing for testing would be if you can put up a test page on the web and give us a url, that way we're able to see all the coding you have that might be causing a problem.

Also, you have both position="relative"; and top= and left=. These are mutually exclusive. Since it's in a table you should drop top= and left=.

Thanks ever so for looking at this.

I'm checking it in old Netscape 4.05 (I figure if it will work in that, it's fairly safe anywhere).

I've taken in your suggestions - still no joy.

No error message, rather the menu simply doesn't appear.

When I have a URL to show you, I certainly will. For now, I'll include the latest version of the code in the table and the Menu Data. Thank you again.

Hi,
You don't need to give us the update each time you do something. You also need to post the code you're posting inside the code tags. The code button above is for that. That's to make sure the code doesn't get corrupted when it's put here.

I can build a page using what you gave, but I can't test it since I do NOT have the function you are calling. Without that all I get is an error. I can leave the function out but then that wouldn't tell you if the menu was working correctly. So, you need to post the function here so I can included it on the page I make.

As to Netscape 4.05, we have NO way to test that. That browser is from sometime back in '95 or so and I know for a fact no one here has it. I can test on 4.79, that's from 97 or so. That browser is much too old to given the advances in web development, and especially as to security and how things have changed in the almost 10 years since then.

The best thing you could do, if it's at all possible would be to make a single test page with the menu on it and upload it to the web someplace for us to get it. I can build the page but I can only build it with nothing but the table with the main menu and the menu calls, that won't tell you if it will work when the rest of the page is done. If you can't put up a test page, again we need the function you are calling the P7_Snap whatever that is.

I'm sorry to say that I've got some bad news. The newer versions of the menu, starting with 5.60 do not seem to work in Netscape 4x. I believe there is no longer support for that version of the browser since it is so many years out of date, but I will check and let you know.

Netscape 4.x should work with the menu but due to the many problems associated with it, may not have some menu features found on other browsers.

In essence the menu should work but not as good. However, we have found a problem with 5.62 that has now been fixed.

It makes me wonder whether I should be too concerned if it doesn't work in Netscape 4.05 PROVIDED it works in all other browsers.

However, what are the fixes with 5.62 Andy? As yes, the menus I am configuring still does not work/appear in the Netscape I am using to check it.

The ns4.js module was updated to 5.63.

As for worrying about 4.05 - personally I wouldn't worry about NS4.anything

I think if you go download version 5.62 again there's been an update to ns4 module,
that's the mmenuns4.js file. I did try your menu in Netscape 4.79 and it
worked, however, even though you posted the function, I have no clue
where it goes, if there are images or something that are supposed to be
on the page, I had to get rid of that part since it kept throwing an error.
When you finally get a place to upload a test page, the best would be the
main page with the menu and function and any images if that is what the
function is doing something with images, that would be best.

Ruth is, as usual, correct. That mod was updated to correct the problem, which is what Andy was telling you about.

Seriously, 4.05 is not worth it. Even 4.79 has dropped by the wayside, at least as far as most programmers are concerned. That browser, at those versions, simply cannot handle what folks are doing these days.

I agree with John about the 4x of Netscape. I think most of the requests we got about them were for things like intranets where some still have the old ones. The menu works great in the newer versions of Netscape, IE, Safari, Firefox and such.
