Loading time on Netscape 4.X browsers

Please note that official support for this menu version has now ceased. There are still plenty of users, though, and the forum is still running. Some of our long-time users may be able to help you out.

Loading time on Netscape 4.X browsers

Post by jack@netcot.com »

Hi,

I am experiencing very high download times for the menu in Netscape 4.X browsers. I've tested on Windows 2000/NT, and a MAC OS v9.1. Some where between 30-50 seconds download from T1 connection. File size for menu_array.js = 11KB, and mmenu.js = 31KB. Anything I am doing wrong?

I've noticed this before using another app where the page did not load at all using this version of Netscape. At the time it had something to do with DIV's!

Thanks,
Sam

Hi,

I have the same problem -- after a reload, netscape 4.7x takes up to 50 seconds to load the page - and that is from my local webserver!

This problem also appears when loading the sample page from the menu.zip package, so I guess my menu code is right.

After loading the page, everything works fine.

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanx

Hi,

Even I have this problem. Infact, I recently posted a message similar to
this one about an error message I keep getting on these browsers
when i attempt to run a page with the menu on it. The title of the
message was "Netscape 4.6 Javascript error in mmenu.js file" .. im sure
it is somehow related!

Thank You,

This is probably the biggest BUG in the menu... I hope its fixed soon... the menus and webpage are pretty much useless in Netscape 4.X...

Hi,

I doubt that it's a specific bug with the menu. Rather, it's a combination of factors with the underlying HTML.

Can you all visit the menu at http://www.milonic.co.uk/menu and see if that has the same problem. If not, it's time to see what problems your HTML has.

Cheers
Andy.

Netscape 4.73 Loading Time

Post by Martin »

Yes, I can confirm this error. In fact, the whole menu system does not really work with netscape 4.73.

Sometimes the rollover effects does not work, especially if you have more than one menu. The Milonic site http://www.milonic.co.uk/menu behaves a bit funny with netscape 4.73...

Yes... it does have the same load time errors, etc. I knew it had to be a problem with the menus itself when the main page for Milonic had the same problems, lol. :?

not an error.

This is not an 'error' as such. It's just a problem with Netscape.
I think it's a problem with the script interpreter, it's always slow.

You could be right... but would that cause the whole webpage to have to reload every time it was resized, even the non-DHTML parts? Think it could ever be fixed? :?

The script interpreter in Netscape 6 runs a lot faster than the Netscape 4 version. So thats ONE thing that better with NS6.
