Mac computer can not pull up the menu

Post by Surfergirl »

I can see my menu, (I use a PC and IE) but my partner in this project can not.

He is using.... OS 9.2.2 on a dual boot G4 with DSL service, Netscape 7.0 on which he received everything but the Navigation Bar at the top
of the Horton page. Also tried Internet Explorer 5 for MAC and was able to down-load nothing, not even the flash intro page.

This is the menu
http://www.adventurescape.com/HortonRealty/home.htm
Its an image menu inside a table.

Is there some special thing about Macs and this menu? or Macs and the Internet - He says he can pull up the BBC and CNN, etc

thanks if anyone knows this one ..... :?

No, nothing at all (other than they're a *^#%$(@ better than Win machines :!: ).

You mentioned dual boot. I'll take that to mean OS 9/OS X, yes? If so, get him on OS X. Have to wait until I get home to look at it on my Mac, but I didn't see anything glaring in your code.

Suggestions - move up to RC10 (don't forget to put your license number in your milonic_src file!). READ THE DOCS on RC10 (install.txt). Changes to the JS calls (no more scriptpath).

Meanwhile, try this. Move...

Code: Select all

<script language=JavaScript src="/HortonRealty/milonic/milonic_src.js" type=text/javascript></script>
...out of the <td> and make it the first item just after <body>. Leave the menu_data call where it is.

Then have him try it under OS X - Safari (it will render fine, but has a few minor problems), IE5.2.3, and/or NS7.1.

John, humor me - I'm scared about changing somthing that looks like it works- I have the RC10 version, or I think I do - do I have to change anything in the menu_data.js file?

Ok, let's see here - did ya hear the one about the - oh, never mind... :P

Yes, you do not have to change anything in your data file :!: [Read that sentence carefully.] The only changes involve the JS calls (now 3 instead of 2), and the deletion of the scriptpath parameter (but you still need the 3 base menu files, including milonic_src, which is where scriptpath was located).

As for RC10, towards the top of the milonic_src you will see...

Code: Select all

Version 5.0 Release Candidate 10.0 Built: Monday September 15 2003 - 12:30
The date and time you see on your copy should be equal to or more recent than that shown above.

Make cents :?:

OK, from home under OS X...

Safari1.0 - Menu displayed and operated properly (but was missing the border around each sub-menu).

IE5.2.3 - Zippo. Nothing (to be expected from IE).

NS7.1 - Same as Safari.

I notice you haven't made the code moves I suggested in a previous post early this morning. We can't help if you don't want to play... :(

Hi John

Yes I did do it, I had to move locations because of future problems with DW templates.

http://www.hortonrealty.tc/hortonrealty/home.htm

I almost sent a message and asked for help but perservered and voila ! it works....I'm not a total scatterbrain.

I'm waiting to hear from my Mac man to see if it made a difference to him - he's still sleeping.... If you can pull it up and he can't could it be that he has some feature not clicked? he couldn't even see the flash movie on the index page....

At work now so I can't check it on a Mac.

If by flash movie you mean the Welcome text box, yes I saw that, but it didn't do anything. Is it animated?

All I saw was a 'Welcome', followed by a paragraph of text. It just sits there (doesn't do anything here on XP, either).

The link you just posted did not show up on Mac or XP.

No, I can see the menu (both Mac as described earlier and Win). What I can't see is the Flash you just posted a link for (unless I specifically go to that link).

Wouldn't hurt to try layers (divs?), but I don't think that's it.

Have him go to http://www.west.asu.edu/reslife/reslife.htm. About 1/4 the way down there's a red/brown "button" with a star on the end that says, "Visit Las Casas". It's Flash. A simple mouseOver should make the star rotate. Just a test to see if his setup can handle any Flash at all.

You might also have him go to http://macromedia.com/ and click on 'Download Flash Player'. This will make sure he has the latest version installed.

I'm not worried about the flash, I can't put a 'skip intro' link on that page - its more about the menu, - he can't see it. Its images in a table, which is the blue bar that he can't see . Nor the drop downs. I don't know anything about macs ...

You don't need to know anything special about Macs. Just program your menu.

I just dragged out an old laptop with 9.1 on it (home sick today) and IE5.1.7. I don't see the menu there, either. It also fails to show under NS7.01.

But - one more time - move...

Code: Select all

<script language=JavaScript src="/HortonRealty/milonic/milonic_src.js" type=text/javascript></script>
...out of the <td> and put it as the first item after <body>. Leave the menu_data.js call by itself in the <td>.

Also, I noticed a number of numeric items in your style that you have quoted ("1", etc.). Again, don't know if that would choke the menu, as it is working on other browsers/platforms.

I'm relocated at - http://www.hortonrealty.tc/hortonrealty/home.htm
I believe the setup is correct, or it wouldn't work...

I went through the code and took off all '' '' around numbers. I still don't have any positive results. Is it the background color being the same as the page?

here is what it does if you put it in <div>
http://www.hortonrealty.tc/hortonrealty/home2.htm
can you see the menu on your Mac with IE?

Can't see it either way (you shouldn't need the div).

Tomorrow I'll try to pull down all your code and load it on the laptop and see what I can do.

John, thanks for all your help. I'm about to loose this contract over the menu not working on his Mac. I love the menu but.... should I go elsewhere?

I'd say stick it out as long as you can. This is THE best menu system around - you won't find any better. Andy has put many hours into workarounds for this kind of problem (unless my fever has caused me to miss something). I just dropped him a note to look at this topic.

Meanwhile, I can't pull your code now because I don't have a Mac at work, but I will try to get it done as soon as I get home.
