Kidding? Have we ever lied to you... :?: :D

They should all go away.

You should be ok. Viewing your file, if everything looks ok and you see no funny characters, things are spaced properly and such, if you save as the text format, it should encode everything properly. Text format is doesn't use as big a character set when displaying and saving files, its not as extensive as Unicode (the text format is ASCII I believe), and thats why something came up funny in Unicode, because it was able to encode something funny when ASCII would just make it a space or nothing at all. Correct me if I am wrong here.

it's hard being stupid, it hurts. If I save it in notepad , text there is a choice of ANSI - is that correct?

Yes, but note that 'choice' is the default, which is exactly what you want. The others are 2 unicode (which we just told you about), and UTF-8, which you also do NOT want.

Rule: Straight, plain-jane text for .js :!:

Yup thats ok. But remember if you dont specify a .js on the end of the file name, it will make it a txt file. You need to make sure you force the name by saying menu_data.js or even "menu_data.js".

I found that sometimes, when the menu didn't appear to change, after I restarted the computer it came up correct. Now I just close the browser and reopen, just to make sure the cache cleared or a new image reloaded.

Much easier to just hold down Shift while clicking Refresh in the browser. This forces (in browsers that behave themselves!) a reload of the page from the server.

have followed the saving process to a T - he says he still can't pull up the menu.

I had him go to milonic.com - he can see that menu - hurray - so its just something wrong on my side - any more good ideas?

Thanks for the tip, I do have it set up to reload every time, but I'll still try it.

Mine is set that way, also, but I know for a fact it doesn't do it every time.

I just pulled your data file down again, and it's still showing up as Unicode.

When you send this file to the server most ftp programs give you a choice of what format to send. Possibilities (not knowing what program you use) are automatic, binary, text, raw, etc. Again, as with the save, you must select text (it might also say ASCII or ANSI). Do NOT rely on automatic, or anything like it, to do the job. Text.

I'm uploading through DW - I don't know if there is a setting.

Are you sure saving it as a text file will dump the bad stuff? I'm looking for the easy way of getting around retyping all that blood sweat and tears.

will try other FTP program now

Just sent you one via e-mail. It should work, but your e-mail program might choke because it's a .js file. Let me know.

Also, since you have DW, why are you editing in note/wordpad :?:

ooo, I don't know - I can't get it open in DW - its says "Unable to launch....be sure the application exists (notepad) and there is enough memory to run it" - so I use Notepad.. tell me how to do it proper ...

I have most likely messed up the src file too - as I uploaded it the same way

Are you talking about the file I just sent you? That was saved in DW! Maybe the e-mail programs messed it up - should have zipped it.

Start up DW, then from the File menu select Open and try to get it that way. If it works do a Save As menu_data.js (don't forget the .js on the end!).

You can also right click on the file itself, then from the popup menu select Open With. If DW isn't already listed there then select Choose Program and select DW from there.
