Forum page very slow to load

Post by stephen702 »

Last week, I found the Milnic forum page a bit slow in loading, but today it’s r-e-a-l-l-y slow. I timed it at 46 seconds on my high-speed connection. I’m not having this problem on any other site I’ve visited today. Anyone else having this problem? Or is it just me? :|

Yes, noticed the same thing today. Noticeably slower for some reason.

Because of some problems we're running on the old server. Once the new machine is back up things will be back to normal speed.

Sorry for the drag... :(

Hi All,

We are currently running EVERYTHING from the old trusty email server and it's struggling with a 30% average CPU load. We had the hackers in a couple of weeks ago through a phpBB exploit (anybody using phpBB lower than version 2.0.11 is strongly advised to upgrade without delay) The hackers managed to install some pretty nasty stuff on the server that meant the only option was to halt it and re-build it. This has now been done but we can't liven it up until we've managed to secure PHP enough to be able to cope with any future holes found in third party software. This is what I'm working on flat out this week and hope to be back to normal by the end of the week. I'm having to rewrite major portions of most pages on the website so that we can turn "Register Globals" off in PHP and do some other stuff to stop these common exploits from being used again. I've got some clever coding that should put a stop to it once and for all.

Anyway, normally the email server deals with around 8 emails per second, most of which is spam that contain attachments so even without the overhead of HTTP it's busy at all times. Adding WWW to it has made it work its little socks off and this is the reason for the lag you may be experiencing.

We should be back to normal by the end of this week providing nothing else goes wrong and the transition runs smoothly. We'll get there. I keep telling myself that but never actually arrive

Cheers
Andy
