Mac IE5 renders wide menus
Mac IE5 renders wide menus
I'm running version 3.5.13 of the menu at http://football.myfantasyleague.com/2002/home/66986 .
The menu renders just fine for most browsers/OSes other than:
-IE5.x for the Mac.
-Safari 1.0 beta 2 (v73) for the Mac.
In IE5.x, the problems are:
1) it seems to ignore the in the top-level menu, so that, for example, "My Leagues" is rendered across two lines rather than one.
2) The drop-down menus are all exceedingly wide, to the point that the For Commissioners -> Setup" menu doesn't even get rendered on the page.
In Safari, all of the top-level menus are compressed down to about 5 or so pixels, making their titles unreadable.
I've seen other IE5.x and Safari browser problems discussed here, but not these in particular.
Any guesses as to possible causes of these problems? I half expect the problem with Safari to be "it's beta software", and I'm fine with that, but I was hoping to at least fix the IE problem...
Thanks in advance!
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
According to the version information page, v3.5.15 introduced a fix involving a problem with the widths of vertical menus. Perhaps if you download the latest version, you could see what problems, if any, remain after you update.
Hope that helps,
Kevin

thanks for the suggestion! but...
thanks for the quick reply, but unfortunately, even with version 3.5.15, I get the same results in both IE5 for the Mac and Safari for the Mac.
Does anyone else have any suggestions?

Just to clarify - you mention the "Menu Border Width" parameter, which is the 5th parameter passed into addmenu. In all cases, I've got that set to 1 - is that what you're referring to?
Or, are you referring to the 3rd parameter, "Menu Width - Menus width in pixels"? I am definitely not setting that right now, mainly due to the fact that things that will affect the width of the menu (like font face and font size) are user-controllable, and therefore won't be fixed for all menus.

thanks for the clarification. unfortunately, given that the end-user has control over things like font size and font face, i was hoping to avoid this solution.
can someone confirm for me that there is some sort of bug in MSIE5 for the Mac, and/or the Safari beta, that would necessitate this specific solution to the problem, or are there other solutions to this problem?

All I know is that, according to the Version Info page:
"With recent point releases the menu caused an error if a vertical menu did not have a declared width.
This, with version 3.x, is mandatory for vertical menus and a default width has now been set at 100 pixels if one has not been declared. This problem has been resolved in version 4.0 where widths for vertical menus are no longer required. Errors should now fail to appear if a vertical menu does not have a width."
You might try specifying widths and see if any of the reported problems go away as a result.
Sorry I can't be of more help... no Macs in sight here.

Also keep in mind IE5.2.2 Mac (current) is pretty much garbage, and Safari b2.v74 is still just that - beta. However, when it finally hits it's going to blow IE away (can't wait for that!).
BTW, yes, I am very much a Mac person!
Care to give V4 a try? Very stable. Jump on http://milonic.com/4beta/menu.htm and enjoy. No docs as yet. Do what the other testers have done and 'reverse-engineer' the demos and samples included. It's not that hard.

thanks again!
thanks for the suggestions.
short-term, I've hard-coded the menu widths for Mac MSIE and Safari browsers. it's a hack solution IMHO, but it should at least make the menu usable for those people.
longer term, I'd love to upgrade to v4 of the menu, however, at first glance, it looks like a total rewrite from v3.x (meaning, all of my addmenu... javascript code needs to change, right?). if so, I'd prefer to hold off on that migration until it achieves non-beta status.

Exactly what is it you find annoying? The fact that you have to do some rewriting of your code to get the benefits of a major upgrade to this program? If that's the case you are, IMHO, out of line. This kind of thing can be expected in a major upgrade to any program (sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't). Further, it's not that hard to do. Andy has spent untold hours trying to make this system better and easier to use. Of course, you can always stay with v3.
If I misread your comment, I apologize.
