Class not registered

Post by TonyManton »

Hi,

Our "test" website is at http://www.dseplc.34sp.com
The menu (v5) views fine on my machine (WinXP) but the menu doesn't appear on a colleagues machine (win 98 with IE5.5), as he gets a javascript error. This error didn't occur prior to us upgrading from a V3 menu.
Strangely, the same error occurs when viewing the menus on the milonic site, and also on some (but not all) of the "our users" sites linked to from milonics site.

The error is Line17, Char 901, Class Not registered, Code 0.
I've seen another posting where someone had this error with an IE6 machine. They solved it by reinstalling the browser (!)

Any ideas before we bite the bullet and reinstall the browser?
Yours

I'm not seeing any problems on your site.

Reinstalling the browser fixed his problem - give it a try.

Hi,

I'm the one who had that problem with my IE 6 browser. It didn't seem to occur in any other browsers that were tested. It obviously is also not occurring with your XP OS.

It only took me about 15 minutes to reinstall the browser. I used Add/Remove programs from the Control Panel. It won't allow you to delete IE. It offerred to repair IE, which I attempted. It gave me an error saying that the problem could not be repaired, please run setup. It then gave me the option of "Add a component." Clicking on that initiated the IE setup, where I told it to re-write the browser, and a few other possibly relevant components. It checked online as it did so to ensure that it had the most up-to-date versions, but it took it from the saved setup files so it avoided 30+ MB of download.

Of course, I then had to re-boot and allow the system to re-configure some system settings. That took as long as the re-write. The whole thing took less than 15 minutes.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306831

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the Urlmon.dll file is not registered.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type Regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK.
When prompted with the DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded message, click OK.

wow excellent jasbar, nice work on that. Try that one out and see if it works, seems pretty straight forward.

Thanks jasbar. That would be a lot faster than re-installing IE.

The problem appears to have been with my browser. However, I wonder how many others will have the same problem and not know it? If the menus don't show up, how do the visitors to my site know that there was supposed to be a menu?

Its possible to place text or instructions under the menu for when the menu does not appear. I place a regular menu underneath.

You also need to get current! You're running RC10, current is RC17 about 5 or 6 levels deep. Update, as there have been many fixes, and I'm still seeing problems on your site.
