subimage position

I am trying to position the subimage just to the right of the menuitem text. I've tried the subimagepadding but it's not consistent since I may have a 5 char menuitem and a 20 char menuitem. Adding a padding of "0 35 0 0" with the default subimageposition does not really work.

I'd like to be able to set the padding of say 5px between the end of the text label and the subimage.

Any ideas?
