More about possible RTL bug in IE

Post by Elaine »

In June, Amr Salem wrote about an RTL problem in Internet Explorer ("Important: Right to left web pages bug"). I now have the same problem. I am using version 5.728. I want to point out that I'm fairly sure that this problem did not exist in earlier versions of the menu. My license number is 198602. I would like to give you a few additional details that might be helpful. (That particular topic turned into a discussion of something else -- that's why I'm beginning a new one.)

All my pages in Arabic and Hebrew must begin with <html dir="rtl">. That is not optional. (Putting dir="rtl" into the head and body tags instead of the html tag creates the same problem in any case.) However, on all pages on IE 6 for the PC (and ONLY IE), the Milonic menu combined with <html dir="rtl"> will create a horizontal scrollbar at the bottom of each page. Moving the scrollbar to the left will then create a huge blank space to the left of the window.

You can see this here (Arabic):
http://www.chai.org.il/_chai_sites/ar/c ... ctuary.htm

and here (Hebrew):
http://www.chai.org.il/_chai_sites/he/c ... ctuary.htm

I made a test file with nothing on the page except the Milonic menu, and the problem still occurs:
http://www.chai.org.il/_chai_sites/he/a ... c_test.htm

I made another test page with NO submenus, and the problem does NOT occur.
http://www.chai.org.il/_chai_sites/he/a ... _nosub.htm

These menus are at
http://www.chai.org.il/_chai_sites/he/m ... _hebrew.js
http://www.chai.org.il/_chai_sites/he/m ... a_nosub.js

I also made a test with your own sample menu, and exactly the same thing happened with <html dir="rtl"> (that is, horizontal scrollbar and huge space to the left):
http://www.chai.org.il/_chai_sites/he/a ... ictest.htm

Please help!

Hi Elaine,

I've posted this to Milonic. I want to thank you so much for all the testing you did. As soon as anything gets resolved there will be a post back here.

Thanks so much.

UPDATE

I just tried this again with my earlier versions of milonic_src.js, mmenudom.js, and mmenu4.js --- one set from February 2004 and one from December 2004. (I save everything!) And the problem I describe DID NOT APPEAR. (I thought it was a new problem, but I wasn't positive.) But I don't want to use an old version of the menu! Please, can you Milonic developers try to fix this?

Hi again. I realize I should have added the links that show what a page looks like with the older Milonic files and with the current Milonic files. The Hebrew and Arabic pages are identical except for these Milonic files.

February 2004 (v 5 RC49) milonic_src.js, mmenudom.js, mmenu4.js (without problem):
http://www.chai.org.il/_chai_sites/he/c ... ctuary.htm

July 7 2005 (v 5.728) milonic_src.js, mmenudom.js, mmenu4.js (with problem):
