Horizontal Image Load Delay

Hi,
I'm having a problem. I have a meu bar with 5 items on it. 2 of the items are actual menus, the other 3 are just links but they have an icon next to the text. When the page loads, then menus load fine but the images that I have on the horizontal portion of the menu do not load until I move the mouse over them. This is really irritating because the user doesn't know there is suppose to be an image. When the mouse moves over it the menu shifts to the right in order to insert the image. Then the mouse over highlighting gets out of place. Is there something I can do to prevent this? I've seen the image preload module and have tried it with no luck. I can't really see how that module is suppose to work. The instructions say to call it AFTER the menu is built. Isn't it too late at that point? I was using 5.792 and just upgraded to 5.796 and experienced this problem with both versions. Sorry but I do not have a public site to post it for testing.
