Protect files

Post by dilbert »

Hi,

Is there a way to protect my js files?

I had someone ask about my site and how they could make their header like mine. They asked if I could share the code.
I said I would but they needed to buy your script first then I would share.
The response I got was, "thanks, I got the files from your site...".

Since I paid for this and don't want others to take it from me (you) for free, how can I protect the files?

Hi,

I have posted this to Milonic since I don't know anything about how to do this. They are pretty fast in replying to things, so hopefully I will have a answer soon.

Hi,

Due to the very nature of how the Internet works it will not be possible to protect .js files.

Basically, everyfile that is sent over the Internet will be in plain text and therefore can be extracted from the browser.

However, there are laws against copying others work and you may be able to seek the advice of a lawyer if this is problem.

Thank you Andy,
I am not a web developer so I appreciate the clarification.
I occasionally use Cold Fusion and I know I can protect files that the web server only can view, I didn't know if that was possible with js files.

I am not too concerned for me, it's your file I am worried they may have stolen. I makes me angry that people like you do good work and expect a small fee for it, then others find it acceptable to take it for free.

Hi,

You are so right, and there is nothing it seems anyone can do about it without spending half their time trying to stop them. This is when I'd like the science fiction stories about nice hackers destroying the program thiefs to be a reality :}
