Beta 4 Display Problem with Safari
Beta 4 Display Problem with Safari
I apologize for the previously posting this in the Version 3 Forum instead of here.
This post continues here from a previous Beta Forum discussion regarding Apple's Safari Browser(v74) and the latest version of the Beta 4 menu...
Let's say I have a top menu named "First" about 300 pixels down from the top of the window and 180 pixels to the right of the left-hand side. Under that "First" menu I have a submenu called named, "Second". Those menus appear as desired and act properly when moused-over.
The problem I have now is when a menu item of "Second" calls another submenu, "Third"; the hierarchical menu of "Third" appears at the top of the window above the horizontal set of menus instead of adjacent to the indicated "Second" menu item at that mouse pointer location.
I have an example menu running at the url below that illustrates this problem using the latest beta release version of Safari. Mouse-over the top-level menu, "Distributed Humanity" and then one of its submenus for the real-time display.
http://www.timeoutofmind.com/menu_test/index.htm
If I can get the indicated submenus to appear at the desired level and next to the calling submenu, I think I'll be ready to deploy.
TIA
Don

Apology not necessary. It was just getting confusing trying to keep v3 and v4 stuff in the proper pile. Now that Andy has rearranged the Forum all will be better.
Looks like you've found a definite bug. I can see it in my Safari (v74), and also on the demo that Andy includes with the v4 download.
He is aware.

Beta Version 4.1.10 Problem with Safari
I just installed the latest build, Beta Version 4.1.10. Thanks!
The hierarchical menus now traverse properly when moused-over, solving the previous problem.
A new problem has appeared. This problem was not in previous versions. Mousing-over an menu-item has the following characteristics:
The url for that menu item briefly appears in the browser status location at the bottom of the window. Then it disappears and there is no way for the browser to respond and go to the page the menu item referrers.
See my test page at:
http://www.timeoutofmind.com/menu_test/index.htm
Using Mac OS 10.2.6 with Safari (v74).
TIA

Re: Beta Version 4.1.10 Problem with Safari
I have a problem similar to that under b8 (haven't gotten to b10 yet, and I don't have access to a Mac right now). Safari behaves the same as you describe (short status display, then gone), but I am still able to click the link and have it activate properly. The only difference I see is I have status info (text) displayed, where it sounds like you don't (just the URL). Apparently Andy needs to give it another nudge.dwlarson wrote:A new problem has appeared. This problem was not in previous versions. Mousing-over an menu-item has the following characteristics:

Will try to get to b10 tonight when I get home.

Beta 4 Display Problem with Safari
Andy,
The way Apple wants to be notified of bugs is via the "Report Bugs to Apple" button in the Safari Browser (it's in the upper-right corner of the Safari browser). That process sends the window info (if specified) and other related info right there from the page being viewed. The submitter can also include a comment to accompany the post.
The other way is to go through the Discussion Group via Apple's Site:
1) Go to http://www.apple.com/
2) Click on the "Support" Tab
3) Click on the "Discussions" link
4) Look down the page for the section, "Networking and Server Discussions", you'll find the link for the Safari discussions there.
5) Click on the "Safari" discussions link and post your information.
Again, keep in mind, the first method is the preferred way to send in bug reports.
HTH!

Beta 4 Display Problem with Safari
Just as a curiosity, why is it that the Safari url-display problem I reported above does not occur under the DHTML version 3.1.15?
I can see the links in Safari on my Home Page http://www.timeoutofmind.com/ using 3.1.15. Although the menus appear squashed underneath the header image, they still are selectable.
What's different about the beta version 4.1.12 that reflects a bug in Safari's code?
TIA
Don

It's to do with the way we now change text in the status bar.
In version 3 we used links and this seems to work fine unless you actually change the status bar message.
In version 4, we change the status bar regardless so the bug rears its head.
I've posted a demo to show this here http://milonic.com/status.htm
Cheers

Is it possible to try 4? I don't see it anywhere.
Will it really not work on Mac OS 8.6?
So far anything above v3.5 just gets worse.
BTW I don't use Safari and don't see any bugs.

Note though that it is still Beta and shouldn't be used in a production environment

The official release of Safari 1.0 (v85) came out today. The problem with DHTML Menu remains as before.

Unfortunately - agreed.dwlarson wrote:The official release of Safari 1.0 (v85) came out today. The problem with DHTML Menu remains as before.
Even on the Milonic home page all the menus and arrows are still jammed against the left side of the bar.
Sorry, boss

John
I was really hoping to get v4 out before Safari became official.
Probably would have done too if I didn't have to deal with you know what.
I've spent almost a whole week dealing with it now, so for those people that think we owe somebody an appology, I dont think so
Anyways, enough complaining for one day. I'm going to see if we can get v3 to support Safari and get one last update posted, hopefully today.
Cheers

Beta 4 Display Problem with Safari
Andy,
I wasn't complaining to you about the status of Beta 4 DHTML Menu. If you thought that was the case, I apologize for that perception. I appreciate your working on the issue!
My comments were indicative of my dissatisfaction with Safari. I'm not alone, there are many people upset with the 1.0 release of that browser for a variety of reasons. I myself have sent Apple several bug reports on three different message boards regarding the DHTML Menu matter and another bug that showed up unrelated to your product.
Again, I appreciate your efforts and I'm not upset with your work.
Sincerely,
Don

No worries
To be honest, I hadn't really thought that your comments were complaining in anyway, just letting us know about the situation.
It was me that was doing the complaining, in the end.
I'm getting more frustrated every day that version 4.0 remains in Beta. I think the product itself is almost ready but we've now got the documention to do, all the samples and the new website.
Lots to do, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel though.

Right on target again! I think they rushed the release because of the show. While it does a lot of things right, and finally managed to essentially push IE out of the picture, there are still a number of very annoying items that have been there since the start.
It's good, but it's not release material.
