Revenge of Menu Display Problems

Post by tepidarium »

Hi,

I'm once again having the same problem as in this thread:

http://milonic.com/forum/viewtopic. ... highlight=

The URL for this problem is:
http://www.citytech.cuny.edu/m-menu.html

Now, the problem is in Netscape 6.1 on windows machine - when the page loads the top right quick links pulldown form element is obscured. The Milonic menu works fine. When the page is reloaded or the form element menu is clicked it comes into view. This happens intermittantly in NS 6.1 and I can't figure out why. When the page is reloaded, sometimes it shows fine, sometimes not.

I have the visible menu inserted in a table cell (position relative) and I have it setup as John suggested in the thread linked above as a seperate javascript.

Thanks for your consideration & any help you can offer!

I made a slight change and put the js calls (except for the relative menu) in the <head> instead of the <body> - I think it is ok in NS 6 - but I know people have said it is best to have the code right after the body tag...what do you think?

Changed url is:

Well, putting the code in the <head> helps things in netscape 6 - but in Opera 5, 7.2 now the menu either does not display or displays broken.

So, I think the code needs to go in the <body> tag - now the quick links menu is once again obscured when the page loads.

Hi,
I have posted a simplified version of the page with the problem.

http://www.citytech.cuny.edu/test2.html

The problem seems to only be evident in Netscape 6 the first time the page is loaded. The quick links pulldown form is obscured by the blue background. When the page is reloaded in Netscape 6 it works...

any ideas?

Thanks again.

Hi Tep,

Unfortunately, I can't test because I don't have NS6. But I have a thought about your pesky select element. Have you considered getting rid of the select box and using another Milonic menu for your Quick Links instead? You could put it in the same spot as the current select box and apply the same menu style as in the main menu, or even use a slightly different style to visually differentiate it from the main menu. To me, there would be two main advantages to this approach: (1) Milonic menus get along well with other Milonic menus, so this approach should eliminate the conflicts you've been having with that select box... no select box... no conflict! (2) Form a user's point of view, this approach would present a more unified navigational scheme, since all of the main navigation would be based on Milonic menus, rather than having two different types of main navigational controls. Just a thought...

Cheers,

Kevin

Hi kevin,
Thanks for your response... I hope you had a good vacation!

The idea of replacing the dropdown menu with a milonic menu never ocured to me. I will try it and get back to you!

PS - They say that with the Final version of the menu hidediv might be back!

It just occured to me - there will be a problem doing this because the main flash movie is right below the quick links menu...oy...! :-) Maybe the final version will alow menu to display over objects...

Thanks. I did indeed, although vacationing with a toddler is a little different than without! Just a different kind of fun. The highlight was seeing a real lava flow! We also poked around some recently cooled flows... I have some pictures of road signs sticking up out of a cooled lava bed... maybe I'll break the rules and post one when I get them developed!

Too bad about that flash. You could get drastic, and try to hide it when the menu opens, but have an capture of the flash (an image) directly behind it so that the image shows when the flash is hidden (you'll see that's what I did in the flash example in the mm_hideDiv stuff. Your flash isn't too erratic (like some are), and is in fact static most of the time, so I bet most users wouldn't even notice. But then again, you have to wonder if it's worth the trouble?

Is there a way to incorporate the Quick Links into the main menu, or does it have to be separate?

That would be cool :)

Hey, I don't know whether I should post this issue in the bug thread that you set up - but I'm still having trouble with the form element being obscured in Netscape 6.1 with milonic menu...

url is

http://www.citytech.cuny.edu/test2.html

Other browsers work fine.
